7th December Net - Remote recording completely corrupted with dropouts as for previous week (sorry).  I think this is due to the receiving software's internal recording system locking up somehow, so will revert to using Audacity.

They must familiarise themselves with host regulations and carry their licence with them.  Using "echolink"  abroad is not subject to these restrictions or rules since you are not transmitting radio waves.  Regarding regional prefixes in the UK, an M6xxx, for example, becomes MM6xxx when operating from Scotland.]

17th May 2018

2E0FQH /

I try and add recordings as soon as possible, the RAW recording will be added in a day or so, the normalised recording may take longer.  It becomes difficult if I am away and make the recording remotely, when it can take a while to catch up.

For Echolink phone users.
Sometimes the modulation from echolink calls is very low, note that you can adjust the microphone output in 6dB steps from the setup section on the top right (Android version), try to make your audio sound as loud as the test sample. Alternatively try different settings for different overs and check the RAW recording.  Note that overdriving the audio causes distortion which is impossible to correct and it also seems to induce recording dropouts.

For Handheld Users.  When handhelds are used near the repeater and the signals are fully quieting there are no problems.  As signal strength drops off, more noise is picked up by the repeater.  If the signal strength varies, the recorded noise varies inversely.  To gain maximum benefit from noise reduction methods on a normalised recording it is best if the signal/noise ratio does not change within the over.  Moving about within an over makes correction more difficult.  [There is nothing that can be done if the propagation path changes - if you are mobile, a big ship or lorry goes past.]  I can do more with noise reduction if you have the radio in a fixed position and use a speaker mic AND/OR fit an external aerial such as a vertical on a magmount [biscuit tin, baking tray, car].  A slim-jim hanging in a window or from a tree is good, especially with a clear path.

Testing Archive:
I am trying different codecs to reduce the size and playing latency of the archive files.  The Testing Archive Link (to be implemented) will enable listener comparisons.  I would appreciate any feedback from listeners who have better hearing than me as to which codecs/speeds give minimal acceptable degradation in listening quality.
